
The National Park of Messolonghi – Etoliko lagoon located in the southwest edge of Central Greec, where the Patraikos Gulf meets the Ionian Sea. It is one of the richest wetlands in Europe, both in terms of the number of different species and for the populations of these species in the region. The National Park includes the lagoon, land and riparian areas of the county Etoloakarnania’s southern part and the island group of Echinades and Kefalonia, which are known for their great biological, ecological, aesthetic, scientific, geomorphological and environmental value. The National Park includes the complex of extensive wetlands formed by the Messolonghi – Etolikou lagoon and outfalls of rivers Evinos and Acheloos. The complex includes river and riverside areas, lagoons, freshwater marshes, salt marshes, swampy areas and riverine forests. Leading role in shaping the wetland have played Evinos and Acheloos Rivers. Messolonghi - Etolikou lagoon is the largest lagoon in Greece and one of the largest protected marine ecosystems of the Mediterranean. Renowned for its delicious fish, fish roe and salt!
